The Importance of Acknowledging Territory in Worship

At the beginning of our worship services at Emmanuel United Church, we take a moment to acknowledge the traditional territory on which we gather. This practice is more than just a formality; it is a sacred act of respect, remembrance, and commitment to truth.

Acknowledging territory reminds us that the land we stand on has a deep history, one that stretches far beyond the arrival of settlers. It honors the Indigenous peoples, particularly our brothers and sisters of Nipissing First Nation, who have cared for this land for generations. By naming and recognizing the original stewards of the land, we open our hearts to the stories, struggles, and strengths of the First Nations communities, and we affirm our solidarity with them.

This acknowledgment is also a call to action. It challenges us to reflect on our own
responsibilities as stewards of the land and to work toward reconciliation, justice, and healing. As we worship together, we do so with a deepened awareness of the land’s history and with a commitment to honoring the relationships we are called to nurture with all of God’s creation and with our Indigenous neighbors.

In this spirit, let us continue to walk together, listening, learning, and building relationships grounded in respect and love.
